In the Image: The DPES scale prior to testing symbolized a higher capacity for participants to experience joy in day-to-day affairs, while remaining relatively close to neutrality.

This study suggested that sharing joy moves participants away from voyeurism and negative experiences like sadism or schadenfreude, and towards experiences with more positive normative dimensions like beauty, gratitude, and positive social connection.
